CUTTING DIES & DIE-CUTTING MOULDS
1. Concept of Cutting Dies
Cutting Dies (Die-cutting moulds)
A cutting die is a specialized tooling set used in die-cutting machines to cut, shear, score, perforate, or crease materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, leather, rubber, fabrics, and aluminum foils into desired shapes (such as boxes, labels, decals, envelopes, cosmetic packaging, etc.).
A cutting die functions similarly to a shaped cutting blade&mdashensuring precise dimensions, clean cuts, and accurate fold lines, which guarantees aesthetic appeal and high consistency in mass production.
2. Structure of a Cutting Die
A complete cutting die set typically consists of the following key components:
|
Component |
Function |
|
1. Die Board / Base (Wood or Aluminum) |
Serves as the foundation to secure the entire rule system usually made of birch plywood, MDF, CNC-machined aluminum, or composite materials. |
|
2. Cutting Rules (Blades) |
Made of hardened spring steel, bent precisely to match the designed shape to cut through materials. |
|
3. Creasing Rules (Scoring blades) |
Used to create fold lines typically engineered to be $0.2 - 0.3 \text{ mm}$ lower than the cutting rules. |
|
4. Ejector Rubber |
Attached around the cutting rules to push the material out of the blades after the die-cutting stroke, preventing jams. |
|
5. Holding Frame or Locating Pins |
Secures the die onto the die-cutting press, ensuring correct alignment and stable cutting pressure. |
3. Classification of Cutting Dies
Depending on fabrication technology and specific applications, cutting dies are classified as follows:
By Material:
Flatbed Wooden Dies: The most common and cost-effective type, widely used in packaging printing and labeling.
Steel Rule / CNC Metal Dies: Feature high precision, ideal for complex products and thicker materials.
Laser-cut Dies: Utilize laser beams to cut precise slots on steel or composite boards, offering extreme accuracy.
By Application:
Flatbed Dies: Used in flatbed die-cutting presses, highly suitable for corrugated cardboard and rigid paperboards.
Rotary Dies: Used in high-speed rotary die-cutting web lines (such as roll-fed printing and roll labels).
Laser Die-Cutter (Toolless): Utilizes digital laser cutting technology without physical steel rules, offering maximum flexibility for rapid prototyping.
4. Applications of Cutting Dies
Cutting dies and rules are extensively utilized across various industries:
|
Industry |
Specific Applications |
|
Printing & Packaging |
Die-cutting for paper boxes, paper bags, labels, decals, hangtags, envelopes, food packaging, cosmetics boxes, etc. |
|
Leather & Garments |
Cutting parts for leather, fabrics, and synthetic leather (simili) used in footwear, bags, apparel, etc. |
|
Plastics & Rubber |
Precision cutting for gaskets, seals, thin plastic sheets, foam, EVA, etc. |
|
Electrical & Electronics |
Precision cutting for insulation films, adhesive sheets, industrial tapes, and component protective layers. |
|
Handicrafts & Advertising |
Shaping for handmade products, greeting cards, gift boxes, and decorative items. |
5. Key Advantages of Die-Cutting Technology
High Precision: Guarantees absolute consistency across mass production runs.
High Speed: Ideally suited for continuous industrial manufacturing.
Flexibility: Allows for rapid mould design modifications to match new product prototypes.
Minimized Material Waste: Optimizes material nesting, ensuring high productivity and aesthetics.
6. Fabrication Process of a Cutting Die
Die-line Design: Creating the technical drawing using CAD or AI vector files.
Laser Slotting: Cutting precise rule slots into the die board using laser machinery.
Steel Rule Bending: Bending the steel cutting rules to match the designed geometry.
Rule Insertion & Rubbering: Inserting the rules into the board slots and installing the ejector rubber.
Quality Control & Sample Testing: Checking tolerances, calibration, and performing sample trial cuts.
7. Conclusion
Cutting dies are an indispensable accessory in the finishing stages of the printing and packaging industries. They automate the cutting and folding processes, ensuring high precision, productivity, and aesthetics, while playing a key role in shaping and enhancing the final value of the product.
