CUTTING RULES OVERVIEW: THE "HEART" OF PRECISION DIE-CUTTING TECHNOLOGY
In the manufacturing of cutting dies for paper packaging, self-adhesive labels, footwear, and electronic component gaskets, the cutting rules (or steel rules) are the parts that directly make contact with and sever the target substrate. A premium-quality cutting rule not only guarantees clean, burr-free product edges but also directly determines the service life of the entire die assembly and the running efficiency of the die-cutting press. Understanding the technical specifications of cutting rules is essential for manufacturers to the most cost-effective and high-performing solutions.
I. KEY TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS GOVERNING CUTTING RULE QUALITY
To meet the complex bending requirements of intricate die designs while maintaining outstanding sharpness under continuous impact, cutting rules are engineered with a perfect balance of hardness and ductility based on core parameters:
1. Body and Edge Hardness
Body Hardness: Typically ranges between 34 and 45 HRC. The body of the rule must remain sufficiently ductile to allow CNC automatic bending machines to form tight radii and complex profiles without cracking or breaking.
Edge Hardness: The cutting edge is induction-hardened to achieve a high rating of 50 to 65 HRC. This extremely hard cutting tip resists physical wear and maintains its keen edge across millions of press strokes.
2. Rule Height and Thickness
Thickness: Measured in Points (Pt) or Millimeters (mm). Common standards include 1.5 Pt (0.53 mm), 2 Pt (0.71 mm), 3 Pt (1.05 mm), and 4 Pt (1.42 mm). Thicker rules withstand higher cutting pressures but are more challenging to bend into tight, intricate shapes.
Height: Available in various standard heights, such as 23.6 mm and 23.8 mm (the standard for paper box folding cartons), and up to over 50 mm for heavy-duty applications like foam dapping and leather footwear cutting.
II. CLASSIFICATION OF CUTTING RULE BEVEL TYPES
The geometry of the bevel determines the amount of tonnage required to execute a cut and dictates the flatness of the finished product's edges:
1. Center Bevel
Structure: Features two symmetrical bevels sloping toward the center of the rule thickness.
Characteristics: The most widely used bevel profile, ensuring cutting forces are distributed equally on both sides. Ideal for general-purpose applications such as corrugated boxes and solid cardboards.
2. Side Bevel (Single Bevel)
Structure: Features one angled bevel face while the opposite side remains completely vertical.
Characteristics: Delivers a perfect 90-degree vertical cut on one side of the material (the finished product side), pushing all material displacement and bevel distortion to the waste/scrap side. Commonly specified for thick rubber gaskets, plastics, or premium leathers.
3. Double Bevel
Structure: Incorporates a two-stage bevel angle (a broader angle on the main body of the bevel and a sharper, narrower angle at the tip).
Characteristics: This geometry provides maximum tip sharpness for effortless material penetration while reinforcing the cutting edge to prevent chipping or rolling when cutting highly rigid materials.
III. STRATEGIC SOLUTIONS TO OPTIMIZE CUTTING RULE LIFE AND PERFORMANCE
During mass production, cutting rules commonly face challenges such as edge dulling, environmental rust, and adhesive buildup from decal stocks. To overcome these issues, advanced surface modifications are applied:
Non-stick Coatings: Applying a thin industrial Teflon (PTFE) coating to the cutting rules completely prevents sticky adhesives from bonding to the blades during label and decal die-cutting. This ensures that cuts remain clean, precise, and gum-free.
Wear-Resistant Hard Coatings: Surface treatments like Titanium Nitride (TiN) or specialized industrial chrome plating increase the surface hardness of the cutting tip and minimize friction. This dramatically extends the operational lifespan of the rule, particularly when cutting highly abrasive materials like recycled paperboards containing mineral dust and impurities.
Although a cutting rule is a relatively small component, it plays a decisive role in the cosmetic perfection of finished packaging and the throughput of the entire packaging line. A clear understanding of core specifications including steel hardness, bevel geometries, and advanced protective coatings is the most effective way for packaging and die manufacturers to reduce tooling wear costs, minimize press downtime for blade changes, and secure a significant competitive edge in the high-demanding packaging and industrial tooling markets.
